A Tribute to Our Buryatian Delegation
Columbus
International Program had the chance to host an Open World Delegation from the
Buryatian region of Russia. The delegation consisted of five educators, social
workers and youth advocates that came to Columbus to learn more about youth
protection services and the American education system. Dora Dondokovna, Yuliya
Yuryevna, Yelena Viktorovna, Irina Nikolayevna, Nikolay Yefremovich and Yelena Anatolyevna traveled to agencies such
as Buckeye Ranch, National Youth Advocate Program and Miami International High
School, where they participated in group discussions about foster care
services, international education and youth advocacy in the United States.
As part of their program, CIP hosted a Russian country presentation for the delegates at St. John’s Episcopal Church on High Street. Ali and Dilfuza, our Uzbek friends and former CIP participants, cooked a delicious feast of Uzbek and Russian cuisine. The Russian delegates treated guests to handmade pelmeni dumplings (that were made on-site!) Nikolay gave a wonderful presentation about Lake Baikal, Buryatia’s most famous landmark, and the group sang their national anthem as well as demonstrated their national folk dance. The event was a hit and with that, the delegation returned home. We were happy to host another Open World delegation and we look forward to upcoming delegations in 2012.
